Vatican City tours 2011

When booking tours of Rome, the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica must also be taken in to account. These places are extemely busy therefore your Vatican tour must be booked online in advance. Sifting through literally thousands of Vatican tour descriptions online will inform you to a point, but what else do Rome tour agencies offer visitors to the Vatican city? Of our guided and self-guided tours of the Vatican, we include unique options that are interesting for everyone. Travellers to the Vatican City want to know about the Circus of Nero, the ancient site where Christians were put to death from 65 AD, and, it is believed, where St. Peter was crucified.

The Vatican Obelisk on St. Peter's Square is a main attraction. It was moved there from Alexandria by Caligula in c. 37 AD, some 30 years before the executions began. Free of inscriptions, it was brought to Rome having commemorated the reign of Augustus in Egypt since c. 100 BC. Standing in front of St. Peter's Basilica on Piazza Pio XII, with the taxi rank and Galleria Savelli souvenir shop right side, the eastern end of the Circus of Nero is just fifteen feet away. It's underground ruins reach below St. Peter's Square then stretch behind the modern basilica to it's westernmost point, close to the Vatican railway station.

Lanciani's study of the old basilica of St. Peter and the exact location of the Circus of Nero can be found at LacusCurtius. This illustration shows both structures as well as the (new) basilica as we see it today.

Shore excursions Rome

Shore excursions to the Vatican City from the port of Civitavecchia are routinely expensive, so naturally we buck the trend and operate a superior pick up service, also from Livorno (to Florence and elsewhere in Tuscany) and Naples as part of our Italy Shore Excursions. Send us a message about shore excursions to Rome and save time as well as money.

Keep reading to learn more about our shore excursion Rome options and offers. You can request Rome shore excursions and we'll send you a personalized quote.

Time is of the essence whenever a ship docks and there are places to get to. It's well worth calculating the approximate distances involved in order to minimize transfer time and see as much as possible en route as well as at the destination. While plenty of transfer time is required to move from the ports of Livorno and Civitavecchia to Florence and Rome, Venice is an exception as port and city are one and the same. In Sicily, both Palermo and Messina are proximal to areas of outstanding natural beauty. Segasta, Monreale, Cefalù and the Madonie mountains are all within an hour's drive from Palermo. Taormina and Castelmola are easily accessible from a Messina port transfer. We can arrange shore excursions and transfers from all of these Italian ports.

Shore excursions from Civitavecchia to Rome, Roman towns, and the surrounding countryside can include Viterbo, Bracciano, Tivoli, Ariccia and Anzio

Day trips from Rome from your cruise ship include a Sedan Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 pax), Minivan Mercedes Viano (max 7 pax) or Minibus Mercedes (max 16 pax). Always air conditioned vehicles with all mod cons and leather interiors.

Our Shore excursions Italy service that include the ports of Messina and Palermo in Sicily offer incredible value. We'll add a Rome and Italy shore excursions page on our Rome tours website in due course. Wherever your cruise ship docks on the peninsula, we'll pick you up and show you the very best Italy has to offer. High quality shore excursions from Rome, Naples, Venice, Livorno, Palermo and Messina.

Which Vatican tour guide when in Rome?

Back at the Vatican, walking across Piazza Risorgimento then following the Vatican walls round to the museums entrance, one can expect to have to share space with a large number of eager tourists. Big tour groups on coaches also arrive with a guide who has travelled to Rome with them from as far afield as the United Kingdom, France and Poland. More often than not, these people have paid for a Rome pilgrimage, a group tour to Rome organised by their local parish or similar community.

Many visitors to Rome book their Vatican tours and other tours of Rome on our website that currently offers 33 privately guided Rome tours, self-guided tours and hybrid activities. On the travel date of their shared Rome tour, they attend our office (a stone's throw away from the Vatican Museums entrance) and wait for their guide or we can meet them at their hotel or other accommodation in Rome if a private tour of Rome has been booked. In our offices, refreshments and a rest room are available. Any questions about the tour or indeed anything else about Rome are answered by In Rome Tours reception staff. We also have walk in tours for visitors who have not pre-booked online. They pass by our office, pay at the desk, then join the next Vatican tour (or book one of our other tours).

An ever-increasing number of "agencies" now operate on the streets that surround St. Peter's Square. Their tour guides know their history inside out and it's relatively unheard of for a Vatican guide to falter in the face of historical fact. However, it goes without saying that it is sensible to pre-book tours online, or at least attend the premises of a licensed tour operator close to the Vatican, where one can arrange a once in a lifetime tour properly in a relaxed and professional environment. Guides who work on the street, and they'll expect a cash payment on the street too, are to be avoided.

Vatican tours in Rome

We have several unique tours of the Vatican to choose from, each starting at a different time of day, and each with a varied itinerary to suit all ages and all interests. Our Vatican tours can begin from the In Rome Tours office on Via Sebastiano Veniero 21, close to the Vatican Museums entrance, or close to St. Peter's Square. Meeting point details are included in booking confirmations.

Our Vatican tours are as follows:  Vatican Treasure Hunt  Vatican Museums & Castle of Angels  St. Peter's Dome at Dawn

Our Vatican tours are centred on our legendary "Vatican Quest", a document penned by the greatest Vatican tour guide in history, many, many moons ago. With the Vatican Quest in hand, you will see and learn infinitely more than travellers who opted to book an in-person guided Vatican tour.

Guided Vatican tours generally include all the major works of art and important rooms such as those of Raphael, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica - with or without dome climb. Our Vatican tour of St. Peter's ascends the dome and includes the entirety of the basilica and square.

Our opinion is that St. Peter's dome climb is an essential activity when in Rome, while inside the Vatican Museums, our Vatican Quest is quintessential, hence we include it on our other two tours of the Vatican.

Pompeii tours

Further south, in the region of Campania, we offer multiple tours of Pompeii from Rome. You can also tour Herculaneum as well as Pompeii in one day or perhaps just tour one site and then enter the other on a self-guided activity. Everyone is different, and we feel that in so far as Pompeii tours from Rome are concerned, we've got all bases covered. For private Pompeii tours and tours of Herculaneum, visit In Pompeii Tours.

Our prices per person for tours in Pompeii and Herculaneum from Rome are outstanding, so do have a look at all your options about touring Pompeii in a day from Rome.

Private Pompeii tours have become rather important due to the big groups we see every day in Pompeii (often 30 people, sometimes 50 people per guide...). Tours of Pompeii over at In Pompeii Tours are fully private and their guides meet clients at Pompeii main railway station, a short walk away from the ruins. It's a perfect scenario when visiting Pompeii, and again, their prices are seriously impressive.

As you may already know, Pompeii and Herculaneum were famously destroyed in AD 79 at the start of the brief reign of Titus Flavius Vespasianus. The Pompeiani were killed by surges of intense heat emanating from Vesuvius during 48 hours of severe eruptions, then buried beneath ash and pumice. We refer to Pompeii today as the destroyed city, and Herculaneum as the preserved city. Visit both with In Rome Tours and you'll understand why.

Naples & tour to Amalfi Coast

Yet further south, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast can be visited. These beautiful places are teetering on the brink of overtourism and they must be experienced sooner rather than later. We can arrange transport and tours from Naples to Amalfi and beyond on request from either In Rome Tours or In Pompeii Tours as you prefer.
